Written by Scuba Turtles   |   19 November 2024

Vourlia beach, Peloponnese

If you’re craving an unforgettable snorkeling adventure, look no further than our Proti Island tour in the stunning Peloponnese. This secluded island, just a short boat ride from the mainland, offers pristine waters, fascinating historical sites, and beautiful marine life that will captivate you.

Ready to embark on this snorkeling journey? Here’s what your day will look like.

A Warm Welcome and Quick Transfer

Your adventure begins with a visit to our dive center, where we’ll meet you in the morning to get everything ready for your snorkeling day tour. After a brief safety briefing and filling out the necessary paperwork, we’ll help you find the perfect-fitting snorkeling equipment to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the day.

Once you’re all set, it’s just a 1-minute van ride to the marina, where our 8.3-meter RIB boat will be waiting. From here, it’s a short 15-minute boat ride to Proti Island.

Wreck at Proti Island

Snorkeling at Vourlia Beach – The famous Shipwreck of Proti Island

Our first stop is Vourlia Beach, a tranquil cove that is the only beach on Proti Island. Here, you’ll have the chance to explore the famous shipwreck that rests in just 5 meters of water. The wreck, a 40-meter-long vessel bombed during World War II, sits with the top part still protruding above the water’s surface, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling.

As you explore the wreck, you’ll be amazed by the surrounding underwater landscape. Once you’ve explored the wreck, you can snorkel around the cove’s steep walls. Keep your eyes open for octopuses, lionfish, and a variety of Mediterranean species.

You’ll have around 1 to 1.5 hours at Vourlia Beach for snorkeling, swimming, or simply relaxing on the shore. This stop is a highlight of your tour.

Grammeno – A Pirate’s Legacy

On our way to the second snorkeling spot, we’ll cruise by the Grammeno Wall. This wall is a historic site where pirates and sailors once carved messages into the rock. These inscriptions were left as wishes for fair weather and safe passage, as the cove provided natural shelter from storms. It’s a fascinating stop for anyone interested in maritime history and the romantic stories of the pirates who once frequented the Ionian Sea.

Snorkeling at Katoulia’s Canyon – Dive into Pirate History

Our second and final snorkeling location takes us to Katoulia’s Canyon, located on the northern side of Proti Island. This dramatic canyon, named after the infamous pirate Katoulias, offers a stunning underwater landscape. Katoulias used this natural hideout to ambush passing ships, making it a place rich in mystery and history.

The steep cliffs and crystal-clear waters create the perfect setting for snorkeling. You’ll have the chance to swim through the canyon, where the underwater morphology is truly breathtaking. We’ll spend about an hour here before heading back to the dive center.

A Scenic Return and Tour Wrap-Up

After our time in Katoulia’s Canyon, we’ll head back to the port with a 15-minute boat ride. Once back at the marina, we’ll transfer you to the dive center, where your Proti Island snorkeling tour concludes around 14:00h.

What’s Included in the Tour

The tour includes all necessary snorkeling equipment, including masks, snorkels, fins, and wet suit. While drinks are not provided, we have a small fridge on board where you can store your water or beverages. We recommend bringing a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to stay comfortable during the day.

Important Notes

The second snorkeling location may be changed if weather conditions are rough to ensure your safety and enjoyment.

Please note that while the snorkeling tour is self-guided, you have the option to add a professional snorkeling guide for an additional fee

If you prefer to customize your tour or if you’re a larger group and would like a private experience, please feel free to contact us with your preferences and request a quote.

The waters are generally calm for most of the year, but if you’re prone to seasickness, we recommend preparing accordingly, as the boat ride can occasionally be a bit bumpy.

1. Voidokilia Beach

Ranked as one of the finest beaches in the whole county, Voidokilia have all the features that will make you fall in love. The unusual shape of the bay, like the Greek omega character, makes it the most Instagramable beach, but this is not all. Sandy dunes and shallow aquamarine waters make it an ideal place to protect against wind and waves. If you have enough strength after swimming around, thrust yourself into a short trek to the Pylos old castle, Paleocastro, on top of the hill and visit the Nestor cave on the way up.

2. Lagkouvardos Beach

Few places in the region are suitable for surfing, which is where Lagkouvardos stands out. The two-kilometre golden sandy coastline is commonly frequented by surfing and windsurfing enthusiasts. Although famous for wind and waves, this beach is ideal for beginners because of the lack of strong currents. You can always protect from the sun by the beautiful pine trees that surround the area, as well as experience beautiful sunsets late on the afternoon.

3. Romanos Beach

Also known by the locals for the name of Glyfadaki, this shore is perfect if you seek for space and silence. At the edges of the beach you can find local beach bars with sun loungers, but if you walk in the middle, you will practically be alone. High sandy dunes, nests of sea turtles, with the potential of witnessing baby sea turtles hatching, make Romanos beach a unique place in the whole Messenia region.

4. Petrochori Beach

On the far end of Glyfadaki is Petrochori Beach. This part is famous for its unique landscape. Here you can find high sand dunes and turquoise clear waters. 5. Divari Beach

Divari also known as Chrysi Akti is located next to Gialova and right across Pylos town. It’s a beach of incredible natural beauty, overlooking the bay of Navarino. Behind you can find the lagoon of Gialova where you can witness beautiful Flamingos. Thousands of birds flying to Africa in autumn, stop at the Gialova lagoon to rest and “refuel” for the last time before the long journey of 3000 km over the Mediterranean Sea and the Sahara desert.

The beach of Divari has a total length of about 4 km, starting from Gialova and ending at a small beautiful beach, where the path to Voidokilia and the path to Paliokastro begin. At the end of the beach, you can reach the beach of Sfaktiria by swimming!

The beach of Divari is located in a protected area of the Natura 2000 network.
